"Although my story has many moments of sorrow, it's not a sad story - it's a love story. It's about my love for my sons, my family, my community, and God. This is a mother's journey of hope, healing, destiny, and even miracles."
- Scarlett Lewis

On December 14, 2012, Scarlett Lewis experienced something that no parent should ever have to endure: she lost her son Jesse in an act of unimaginable violence. The day started just like any other, but when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Scarlett’s life changed forever. However, this isn’t a story about a massacre. It’s a story about love and survival. It’s about how to face the impossible, how to find courage when you think you have none, and how to choose love instead of anger, fear, or hatred.

Following Jesse’s death, Scarlett went on an unexpected journey, inspired by a simple three-word message he had scrawled on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died: Norurting Helin Love (Nurturing Healing Love). It was as if he knew just what his family would need in order to go on after this horrible tragedy.

Bolstered by his words, Scarlett took her first step toward a new life. And with each step, it became clearer how true Jesse’s message was. She learned that love was indeed the essential element necessary to move forward and that taking the path of love is a choice. We can live in anger and resentment, or we can choose love and forgiveness.

With her decision made, she found some peace and began to believe that choosing love was the key to creating a healthy, safe, and happy world. She began the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation to develop programs to teach children about the power each of us has to change our thoughts and choose a life without fear and hate.

Nurturing Healing Love is Scarlett's story of how choosing love is changing her life-and how it could change our world.

"Beautiful. Healing magic. Inspirational story of a woman who chose love when she had every reason to die to herself. If she can, we all can. I felt my own attachment to my own grief slipping away while reading this book. Magic. ♥ Jesse ♥"

"If this mother can heal from her trauma and still send the message "choose love" imagine what the world can do! Tears were rolling down my cheeks as I read NURTURING HEALING LOVE, the story is riveting, and upon finishing it, my heart is lighter and I'm feeling inspired. I hope this author's level of consciousness is reflective of a growing number of people in our world. Let's hope we reach a tipping point soon. I can't recommend this book highly enough."

When tragedy strikes, our first human response is to react in anger and with rage in our hearts, to attempt to end such dark behavior by throwing more darkness at the problem. Yet our rational minds tell us that reacting with darkness in the form of hatred and madness simply expands and multiplies the darkness. The only answer to so much darkness is to bring light. As Saint Francis of Assisi reminded us in his widely recited prayer, "Where there is darkness, let me bring light." . . .

Scarlett Lewis has faced the ultimate darkness. She has shared, from a deep place of truth within, the agony of losing her Jesse at such a tender age. She has shared her very personal journey back to living and teaching how to become instruments of love...

Her message is a reflection of Jesse’s life. It is what I humbly attempt to live and teach. Where there is hatred, change the thought. Where there is no love, we must put love, and then surely we will find love.
